NAME
The name has been possibly derived from the Germanic word APA and the Celtic AHWA or AHAWA, both meaning water or lots of water. Blending of the two names led to the Czech name Opava, Latin Opavia and German Troppau.

Opava is located in the fertile valley of the Opava river. It is bounded by the spurs of Nízký Jeseník in the southwest and Poopavská Lowland in the east.
